Let me start by saying I am confident that this is one of the cleanest original Mk2 XR2s left, and my vision all the way along this project has been to prepare a competition car with absolute attention to detail in every way. As a kid, I'd go and watch racing/rallying and be disappointed to see my favourite cars up close and notice the condition wasn't as good as they looked out on the stage/track. My ethos towards competition cars is that if you start with a stunningly presented car, then you can concentrate on the important things rather than spending time and money on chasing rust or maintaining a neglected car. You would struggle in some cases to find a 2 year old car in the condition this 20 year old is presented in!
Apart from the fact that I spent so long looking for a Mk2 this clean (and paid for it accordingly!!) and I would never find such a perfect original car to start from, this car embodies a whole host of dreams, ambitions and plans I've had since school age of building a race prepared XR2. The only reason you are reading this advert is because I am a rally boy deep down; my parents used to rally, I've had a bit of experience with rally cars and ultimately that's my goal. I have recently been inspired to explore the possibility of actually taking up this ambition, but in all honesty I could not see this car planted round a rough rally stage, it really is too mint. That is why I have built it for sprints/hillclimbs, and while it is eligible for circuit racing/rallying with very little extra needed for regs in these categories it really does need to be kept as a near-concourse show car and used for non-damaging competition. In my opinion, of course.
The car is a 1988 model Ford Fiesta XR2, with 48,000 miles on the clock from new. It was stored in a private collection for 12 years until a couple of years ago, hence the unbelievable condition. It has a folder bulging full of receipts and evidence of the car's history/condition and when I got hold of it was a near-concourse show car.
**MOT until April '08, 6 months tax**
It is now fully prepared to MSA regulations for sprints/hillclimbs in the modified production class, and I am currently competing with it. I'm far more competitive with the cars in the road modified class, so will be returning a lightweight version of the back seat in time for next year (if I still have it of course!) to meet regs for this class. It has the following modifications:
Engine:
- Ashley 4 branch race manifold with mild steel competition exhaust system, welded in flexi pipe for track use
- K&N Air filter
- Early (DFT) type carb, tuned by Bogg Brothers featuring one of the chokes removed, polished chambers, larger jets and knife-edged butterflies
Brakes / Suspension:
- G-Max full suspension (shocks and springs), which I did originally plan to change but it has performed so well on track that I have refrained!
- Brembo Brake discs with Mintex competition pads (popular race spec set-up)
- Braided brake hoses
- Polybushes
Wheels/Tyres:
- Two sets of black pepper alloy wheels:
Marshall Power Racer tyres (List 1A MSA)
Set of nearly new (done two sprints) Yokohama A048 cut slicks (List 1B MSA)
Interior:
- Shell completely stripped of sound deadening/tar pads, all trim removed then painted in Radiant Red (those bits that needed painting-the bits already exposed were perfect finish, and still are!)
- Safety Devices 6 Point bolt-in rollcage, with fixed diagonal and door bars
- OMP rear strut brace
- Helmet hammock
- Sparco Sprint FIA approved seats, mounted as low as possible for centre of gravity
- Ricco 4 point FIA 4" race harnesses
- Lifeline hand held extinguisher 2.75l
- Lightweight, minutely measured and shaped foamex doorcards and rear inner panels
- Rare mint RS three spoke deep dish steering wheel
- Extra switches for immobiliser, fan circuit over-ride
- FIA Cut-off switch
- Quaife gearknob
- DIN 3 dial gauge holder in place of stereo with dial mounts angled towards driver
- Mini door pull grab handles (nothing worse than half a job, so I hunted around for the best thing to use as a piece of wire would never have done!!)
Exterior:
- Standard, mint XR2 bodyshell with bodykit in perfect condition and mostly original paint (odd stone chip, to be expected)
- Polycarbonate sunroof (using original seal and mechanism, but lighter and safer than glass original item)
- Direct to screen wiper washers
- Rear wiper removed (for weight saving)
All extra little motorsport modifications that slip my mind as I put this together are fitted and working, and the car is literally ready to race. I have carried out all modifications with the character of the car 100% intact, as I think these things look fantastic as standard and wouldn't want to touch such beautiful original bodywork!
I picked up a dent in the front n/s wing and even went as far as sourcing someone who would panel beat the dent out (to keep originality-factory spot welds can NEVER be matched), and who assured me he'd source original rivets for the bodykit and achieve a finish which was absolutely matched to the original paint. This he did, and despite numerous attempts by bodywork and paint experts since to pick fault with the work it has never been shown up, inside or out!! I am that fussy and everyone who has touched this car has been someone I trust explicitly to do a good job, maintain my stupidly high level of attention to detail and make sure the job is one which will last.
The engine starts first time, runs perfectly, has a lot of go (feels quicker than my Citroen C2 VTS road car, truthfully!) and has had nearly all the electric consumables replaced in the time I have owned it as a matter of on-going maintenance.
It has an oil change after each event
The gearbox is so new and notchy, feeling like the day it left the factory-no need for a quick shift here!
The car is hardly ever driven on a wet road and has had 3 applications of waxoyl in the time I have owned it (just under two years). While it seemed a shame to do this with the pretty paintwork underneath and in the arches, it was simply a given that this car may be driven on a wet track and I want it to stay absolutely perfect underneath.
All the crucial areas are perfect, with the sills, arches, under-kit areas, inner wings, bulkhead, boot floor and seams all being rust free. All stonechip-induced rust when I got the car was repaired to a very high standard (it really was the odd spec where a chip had not been touched up, nothing more at all).
You will not find a cleaner original example, especially built to MSA race regulations. I know this because I spent so long looking before shelling out for the right car.
That's the car, and here are a few links to pictures/videos which will tell you more:
Pictures to show just how clean the car is all over. It is very easy to mask a car and make it look better than it is in photos. I want you to see exactly what I mean when I say this car is better than you could ever imagine, so here are a few (!) photos of the crucial areas: http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o95/paulwoodford/XR2%20crucial%20areas/
Here are photo and video links to the car in action at Harewood Hillclimb in July: http://www.whatnonegatives.com/2007/070708_hare/158_HTML/index.htm

And a link to a video I made to show the preparation. I had so many photos of bits and pieces that I decided to collate them all and create a 5 minute summary of my work over the last year and a half! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHS_xx0F7dY
I hope this has given you a suitable insight into a car which really is as good as it sounds and looks. It never fails to get nice comments and amazed looks when people get close, whether on the track or on the road and being a modern classic is growing in value, appreciation and credibility day on day. The price of a standard XR2 in anywhere near this condition has rocketed recently (the car which now sports this car's interior is now for sale for just under £10k!!!!), and I truly believe you will not find a competition/show car prepared to this standard outside of a works preparation unit. All parts used are brand new or as new. No expense has been spared whatsoever in building this stunning race car.
The car has an agreed value of £5000 with Competition Car Insurance. The price takes into account the fact that to even find one in this condition is rare, and you wouldn't be able to do so and prepare it to this level for anywhere near the price. The last two 'low' mileage standard examples (which infact were both higher than mine) went for over £3k, then there's the concours ones which have been for sale recently at £8k and £9k. So, with the value and particularly the desirability soaring at the moment this is a car which will certainly never lose you any money and will probably represent a solid investment if you look after it properly (which you must!!). It has cost me far more to build than the price, as many of you will know you never get your money back with these things. This is why I'll be going for a ready-prepared rally car if things progress.
It is easier to insure than you may think - at 22 years old and with 1 years no claims I was quoted £550 fully comp with track day cover from HIC, with competition car insurance coming in at £700 (I was competing so needed full competition cover).
If anyone is seriously interested, then please get in touch. I have been cagey about actually putting it up for sale because more than any other car this one HAS to go to someone who I am confident will appreciate it and do it justice.
Getting into motor sport isn't as difficult as you may imagine. Indeed the hardest part is building a car which is competitive and completely to regulations. Saying that, there are other things which you need to do, such as get your MSA licence and sort yourself out with a few bits of personal equipment.
This car is absolutely to regulations, having passed two scrutineering sessions with flying colours prior to my last two events. I would be more than happy to put together an information pack for anyone who buys the car and wants to continue using it for what it is built for. It really is easy to get into sprinting if the car is prepared properly, and I'll be only too happy to lend a hand to anyone who is unsure, as I too was in that situation myself not too many years ago!
